Композитор, оказавший значительное влияние на музыкальную культуру XX в. Учился в Нью-Йорке и Париже, ранние работы созданы под влиянием французских импрессионистов, в них видны эксперименты с джазом [jazz] (работы "Музыка для театра" ["Music for the Theater"] (1925) и "Концерт для фортепьяно" ["Piano Concerto"] (1927)). В таких произведениях, как "Вариации для фортепьяно" ["Piano Variations"] (1930) и "Заявления" ["Statements"] (1933-35) слышны нервные, неравномерные ритмы, угловатые мелодии, диссонанс. В середине 30-х Копленд обращается к более простому стилю, мелодичному и лиричному, часто используя элементы американской и мексиканской народной музыки. Лучшие работы 40-х связаны с американской тематикой - "Портрет Линкольна" ["Lincoln Portrait"] (1942), балеты "Родео" ["Rodeo"] (1942), "Весна в Аппалачах" ["Appalachian Spring"] (1944; Пулитцеровская премия [Pulitzer Prize] 1945). Среди известных работ для оркестра - "Симфония для органа с оркестром" ["Symphony for Organ and Orchestra"] (1925), "Симфоническая ода" ["Symphonic Ode"] (1932), "Третья симфония" ["Third Symphony"] (1946). Неоднократно создавал музыку для кинофильмов ("Наследница" ["The Heiress"] (1949); премия "Оскар" [Oscar]). Копленд много сделал для популяризации современной музыки, был популярным преподавателем в Беркширском центре музыки [Berkshire Music Center] (1940-65). Автор ряда книг, в том числе "К чему прислушиваться в музыке" ["What to Listen for in Music"] (1939), "Наша новая музыка" ["Our New Music"] (1941), "Музыка и фантазия" ["Music and Imagination"] (1952), "Копленд о музыке" ["Copland on Music"] (1960).
